March 2015 Brewcasts

Saturday March 28th 2015

Nicol Winkler (AKA The Thirsty German) and Daniel Ekker from Argonaut Wine & Liquor filled in while Turk was pouring beers in Asheville NC.  In Hour one they talked to special guests from Joyride Brewing Company: owner Dave Bergen and brewer Nathan Lincoln. They are rocking out amazing beers with a real cool taproom at 25th and Sheridan in Edgewater. Great to finally get these guys in. We also chatted with Todd Tebo from Breckenridge Brewery. In hour two owner David Lin and head brewer Marks Lanham from Comrade Brewing Company joined the fray. They have been turning heads with their Superpower IPA. Marks is former head brewer at Grand Teton, Boneyard and Barley Browns and really knows how to work with hops. David comes from Dry Dock Brewing Company. We also had on the line Terry Martin who is a local homebrewer who is helping a local non-profit organize a home brew tasting event in Denver on April 24.  Salus World helps with mental health issues in war torn regions, like Malaysia. She’s looking for local homebrewers to donate 2.5 gallons (or so) of up to 2 styles of their beer. Basically, they’ll be pouring their beer for a good cause, helping to raise awareness of the non-profit. The event is in RiNo, at the Posner Center, on April 24. Contact her at this email: Two winners will be selected, a judges choice and a people’s choice. Winners will have the opportunity to win a gift certificate to a local homebrew shop. We also gave you a healthy dose of Brew News You Can Use.

Nicol Winkler and Turk had the honor to broadcast from the 2nd Annual Collaboration Festival. This time around it was at Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium. This fest pits local Colorado Brewers Guild Members who have collaborated on a beer from in or out of state to make a beer specifically for this festival. There were over 70 beers for festy goers to get in on. Imbibe Denver and the CBG do a stellar job on this event. We talked to several guests including Breckenridge Brewery‘s Todd Thibault, Strange Craft Beer‘s Tim Myers, Wit’s End Brewing‘s Scott Witsoe, Telluride Brewing‘s Tommy Thatcher, Imbibe‘s Keanen Stoner, Black Sky Brewery‘s Harry Smith, Chain Reaction Brewing‘s Zach Cristofferson and the Colorado Brewers Guild‘s John Carlson. Of course we did a nice Brew News You Can Use segment!

This week we headed back to Nederland and Very Nice Brewing Company for a special broadcast during Frozen Dead Guy Days. Owner and Head Brewer Jeffrey Green sat in the whole show and hosted with Turk. There’s no doubt why they call this place Very Nice because Jeffrey and his wife Susan and staff are some of the nicest folks you will ever meet. They are also bringing great beers to one of the coolest towns on earth. We talked about their collaboration brew with Justin Tilotta and Kai Witkiewicz of Twisted Pine Brewing Company. This was a Cherry Midnight Wheat Saison. We also talked to Jason DeBellis who is a CU student making a documentary about Colorado Beer Culture. Check out his kickstarter at HTTP://KCK.ST.1CD6DHR. Other guests included Breckenridge Brewery‘s Todd Thibault, Strange Craft Beer‘s Tim Myers, Großen Bart Brewery‘s Shad Chancey, Brewers Association‘s Tommy Cunningham and author Dan Rabin who penned Colorado Breweries.

These two dreamed up a collab between their two breweries and one of their favorite bands Reel Big Fish. They all got together to make Reel Big Stout! They had some release parties we talked about and talked about Wynkoop and Ska in general. We also hit up Breckenridge Brewery’s Todd Thibault. In hour two we were joined by Summer Stewart of Parry’s Pizzeria & Bar. She is responsible for filling 264 taps around the metro. 2nd year in a row we broadcasted from the Highlands Ranch Beer Festival. This time around we had between 50 and 60 breweries and about 250 more people. This has sold out the last two years as well as the craft beer revolution is strong in the south metro! The Thirsty German, Nicol Winkler was the special co host for this one! We led off with Jamie Noebel who is the Community Relations Manager for the HRCA. We talked about the fest and about the beneficiary of the funds raised which is the Highlands Ranch Community Scholarship Fund. Next up was Peggy Lyle who is the Event and Entertainment Director for the Downtown Fort Collins Business Administration. They put on the Colorado Brewers Festival in downtown Ft. Collins which this year turns 25 years old. A ton of new added features and events to the fest and they are giving away free beer for a year to a lucky person that registers online for some festival bucks. This is a 3 day event that runs June 27th through June 29th. We then chatted with Todd Thibault from Breckenridge Brewery as he was down in Pagosa Springs for the Blues and Bluegrass Fest. They have some cool events coming up including their 24th anniversary Hottenanny on July 12th.

In hour two we led off with Jerod Hutchison and Jason Wiley from the Colorado Keg House which is set to open at the end of the month in Broomfield by the First Bank Center.  They will have 75 all Colorado taps and all beers will be just 5 bucks. These guys are going to rock in on the 36 corridor! Next up was Alex Ogrinz who is the event specialist for Upslope Brewing Company. We talked about their new beers, the Get Down and much more. And finally, we nailed down Jodie Whealy form Ska Brewing. This is about as rare as a Yeti sighting. Was an honor to get her on and talk about all things Ska. Their 19th anniversary is coming up in September and should be a blast as always! We closed the show with Brew News You Can Use as there is never a dull moment in the state in great beer! Big thanks to Amanda Arnce for the invite and for putting on such a great festival as well as the amazing staff that made this one seamless! We are grateful to broadcast here each year!
